Protecting the names of Cepaea nemoralis (Linnaeus, 1758) and some other well-known helicoids

Our research shows that most of the probable syntypes for Cepaea nemoralis (Linnaeus, 1758) actually represent Cepaea hortensis (O.F. Müller, 1774). This could destabilise the nomenclature of this well-known species. In this paper we select the only remaining syntype of which the type status is not challenged and that represents C. nemoralis as currently understood as the lectotype for the taxon. In addition, we discuss nomenclatural issues with a few other well-known helicoids. It is likely that more nomenclatural work is needed on several large-bodied, well-known European and North African helicoids.
