Nomenclatural note: The priority for Nitella capillaris was recognised at the beginning of the twentieth century; before that Chara capitata, Nitella capitata or Nitella syncarpa var. capitata were used. Taxonomic note: R. D. Wood and S. Cirujano regarded Tolypella coutinhoi as a synonym of Nitella syncarpa, but this has been rejected by R. Romanov after the study of type specimen of T. coutinhoi.
