Scapania undulata was recorded on the bank of the Hegebeek in the southeasternmost part of Twente, near the German border. It was first collected there in 1977. Curiously enough, this hepatic was discovered in the Netherlands only as late as 1956, although it is not likely to be a recent immigrant. Sofar records had only been published referring to rivulets on the Veluwe (prov. of Gelderland) and near Hilvarenbeek (S. of Tilburg, prov. of Noord-Brabant). It thrives on woody or stony substrata about the spring water level. Along the Hegebeek, it was found exclusively on Alnus glutinosa-roots uncovered by the stream.
