On the basis of recent observations and study of herbarium material it might tentatively be concluded that var. anomala (with erecto-patent barb hairs on achenes as well as on the bristles) is becoming more common since 1954 and might be locally replacing the hitherto more common var. fallax (with reflexed barb hairs). As yet the number of records is insufficient to warrant a more definite conclusion, but data permit the suggestion that there is a slight ecological difference between both varieties, too, with var. anomala mainly occurring on peat and clay soils, and var. fallax mainly on sandy and riverine soils
