Simon Jan van Ooststroom, who passed away on the 28th of September 1982 at the age of 76, was the founder of Gorteria and the first professional botanist working on the Netherlands flora. He revised 14 editions of the 'Flora van Nederland', both in its illustrated and concise form. For a long period he was the Secretary of the Editorial Committee for the Flora Neerlandica. Together with Th.J. Reichgelt Van Ooststroom revised 25 families, and by himself 10 families for this standard work. His biography written by Maas Geesteranus (1971) and Van Steenis (1971) on the occasion of his retirement as Head of the Department of the Netherlands Flora has been complemented here with additional data.
