In 1975, a sterile Carex-hybrid was collected in the vicinity of Heerenveen (prov. of Friesland). At first sight it resembled Carex X beckmanniana Figert ( C. riparia Curt. X C. rostrata Stokes). Further study, however, reveiled that the hybrid shows affinity to C. acutiformis Ehrh. instead of C riparia, and is intermediate between the supposed parents C. acutiformis and C. rostrata, as shown in the table and the figures. This hybrid has not been found in the Netherlands before nor, as far as we know, elsewhere in Europe. The name Carex X bakkerana is proposed in honour of the late Prof. Dr. D. Bakker.
