Tilia cordata and T. platyphyllos are both rare indigenous species. Also their hybrid, Tilia x vulgaris, can occur spontaneously. Among older trees (of girth > 4.5 m) in villages or estates some specimens are found which may be original. About 50 of them have been located and are described in this paper, most of them belonging to Tilia x vulgaris. This hybrid was also cultivated since the 17th century, possibly starting from indigenous material. Propagation of originally indigenous specimens is important in order to develop more natural woodlands in the Netherlands. Older cultivars are of importance for restoration of historical sites.
