In 2008 the Lowland Hybrid Shield-fern, Polystichum ×bicknellii (Christ) Hahne, was recorded for the first time in the Netherlands in a forest (‘Kuinderbos’) in the Province of Flevoland. A single individual was found amid a population of Polystichum aculeatum (L.) Roth. at a side of a drainage trench, where it was growing in the shadow of Fagus sylvatica L. and Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carrière on very fine lime containing sand. Polystichum aculeatum is one of its parents; the other parent, P. setiferum (Forssk.) T.Moore ex Woyn., was found at a distance of 90 m from the hybrid plant. Molecular and cytometric analyses have confirmed the hybrid status.
