This study concentrates on the analysis of 34 species earlier referred to Polypodium Linnaeus (sensu lato) with a (partly) goniophlebioid venation pattern and also includes a selection of free veined Polypodium species. Status and nomenclature of the goniophlebioids are most ambiguous and show much variation. Several earlier attempts by other authors towards a natural classification have remained unsuccessful as is elucidated in a paragraph on the taxonomic history of the group.
