The new species Cyperus macropachycephalus, known only from Chambri Lake in the Lower Sepik area (Papua New Guinea) is described and illustrated. Its ovary is dimerous and dorsiventrally compressed, much flattened, or more rarely trimerous, and then compressed subtrigonous. A close relative could be Cyperus pachycephalus Kem, but the wider affinities are rather obscure.
