The following lines are intended to serve as an introduction to a series of articles which will treat, under the above mentioned general title, of the zoological collections made during the latest Dutch explorations in Western and Central Borneo 1). Early in the year 1893 the Society for the advancement of Natural history exploration in the Dutch Colonies (Maatschappij ter bevordering van het Natuurkundig onderzoek der Nederlandsche Koloniën) decided to send out, with the aid and under the protection of the Colonial Government, a scientific expedition to Dutch West-Borneo.
