The fracture of wood in relation to its structure

The work of fracture of wood has been measured and the experimental results have been discussed in relation to a model based on various morphological aspects of wood structure. The asymmetrical helical structure of the S2 wall layers appears to be relevant to the fracture behaviour of wood in tension.
