Short term variation in tracheid development in the early wood of Picea sitchensis

An examination was made of the dimensions of each individual cell along radial files of tracheids. Groups of neighbouring cells were found to have large diameters and thick walls. It is suggested that cambial development proceeds in a series of ‘episodes’ of enhanced activity.
