A jubilee book in honour of Professor Martin is the right place for an essay on the Tertiary of the Dutch East Indies, as it was he who laid the foundations of stratigraphy in that district. The basis upon which he founded the subdivisions of the tertiary deposits has proved the firmer the more it has been tested.
