Difference in protoconch structure is the reason to consider Columbella rustica (Linné, 1758) and Columbella adansoni Menke, 1853 as distinct species. C. adansoni is the East Atlantic species with a planktotrophic larval development, restricted to the Macaronesian islands. Columbella rustica is the Mediterranean and West African species with direct development.
