In the Río Argos sequence (Murcia, SE Spain) belemnites were collected in ammonite controlled Lower Cretaceous strata. The calibration towards ammonite biozones gives the opportunity to specify the biostratigraphical ranges of belemnites in the (western) Mediterranean. Emphasized are the Berriasian- Valanginian and Hauterivian-Barremian boundary intervals. Three new species and two possible new species are described under open nomenclature: Castellanibelus sp. A, Duvalia sp. A, Duvalia sp. B, Duvalia sp. indet. nov. ? and Duvalia aff. deeckei. A provisional framework for future detailed biostratigraphical zonation by means of belemnites is given for the western Tethyan Basin.
