Overzicht van het zweefvliegengenus Psilota in Nederland (Diptera: Syrphidae)

Review of the genus Psilota in the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) A review of the genus Psilota in the Netherlands is presented. It is demonstrated that the genus is represented by a complex of two species, Psilota anthracina Meigen, 1822 and P. atra (Fallén, 1817), as already indicated by Kassebeer. Both species can be separated using the key provided below. The interpretation of the species is exactly opposite to that in recent literature. Unfortunately, the holotype of P. atra Fallén was lost during transport. Therefore, we designate a neotype, again a male from Sweden (fig. 6). Our interpretation of the species is based on this neotype and the description and pictures of P. anthracina by Meigen. The habitats of both species in the Netherlands differ. Psilota atra is found near pine forest whereas P. anthracina is found near deciduous forest. This seems to agree with the situation in the surrounding countries, as far as we could establish. A key to both species is provided and the male genitalia are illustrated. Key to the Dutch species 1 Hind femur strongly thickened, about twice as broad as the mid femur. Female: posterior (convex) part of mesanepisternite with white hairs, abdomen predominantly lighthaired, the 2nd tergite with conspicuous long white hairs in the frontal corners, 3rd tergite predominantly light-haired; 3rd antennal segment about 2 times longer than high. Male: genitalia: epandrium distinctly elongated (fig. 4). . . . . . . . . . . . . Psilota atra - Hind femur only slightly thickened, at most 1.5 times as broad as the mid femur. Female: posterior (convex) part of mesanepisternite black-haired, abdomen more black haired, the 2nd tergite without conspicuous long white hairs in the frontal corners, 3rd tergite predominantly black-haired; 3rd antennal segment about 1.5 times longer than high. Male: genitalia: epandrium not elongated (fig. 5). . . . . . . . . . . . Psilota anthracina
