The taxonomic treatment of Asian taxa of bulbuls (Pycnonotidae) is discussed with explanations of some historical changes. Attention is drawn to competing hypotheses as to treatment and recommendations are made for their further evaluation. The type locality of Ixos plumigerus Lafresnaye, 1840, is restricted.
